Who We Are


Many dedicated people have contributed to organizing, conducting, and leading Sufi Order classes and events in Toronto. Here you'll find a bit of information about some of them.

 


 

Amina

AminaAmina was ordained as a Reverend Cheraga (Minister) in 2004 and has been conducting Universal Worship services on a regular basis since 2005, more recently in tandem with Gabriel and Kerri.

 

Bassam

BassamBassam Victor Demko has been leading meditation, chanting and classes in the Sufi Order Esoteric School for 10 years. He has been conferred a “Salik fi sabil illah” (Wayfarer of the Endless Road) by Pir Zia Inayat Khan and the Senior Sufi Teachers of the Suluk Academy where he holds a 4 year degree in the Inner Yoga of Sufism. Bassam meditated with Pir Vilayat Khan for over 175 days during his 11 years of study with Pir Vilayat prior to his passing in 2004. Currently Bassam leads the monthly Zikr Circle.

 

Eric

EricEric has been a Sufi Order initiate since 2005. He helps to maintain this soitoronto.org website and the periodic email newsletters.

 

Gabriel

GabrielLeslie Gabriel Mezei was initiated into the Sufi Order International by Pir Vilayat Khan in 1985. In 1995 he was ordained as a Cherag (Minister) of the Universal Worship, and has been involved with regular public offerings of that service in Toronto ever since, including a popular annual Festival of Lights version in December. He has taken on many leadership roles in the interfaith movement, and is Founding Publisher of the Interfaith Unity News. Currently Gabriel is taking an active role in the Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream symposiums of the Pachamama Alliance, to bring about a spiritually fulfilling, socially just and environmentally sustainable human presence on Earth. A writer and speaker, Gabriel loves to recite the poetry of Jellaudin Rumi and others, often with musical accompaniment, and also plays the Turkish bamboo flute, called the ney.

 

Habib

HabibHabib has been an initiate in the Sufi Order and a Dances of Universal Peace leader for 35 years. He started teaching Sufi Order classes in 1980, took a decade-long break to raise a family, and began teaching again seven years ago. He's been leading the Way of the Heart class in Toronto since 2008. For Habib and his students, Sufism is primarily an experiential path, leading to spiritual growth by getting to know oneself through the feelings and experiences of Sufi practices. Participants in his classes will "definitely have an experience that's tangible and that they can take with them and say, 'Hey, I did this and man do I feel different!'"

 

Hafiz

HafizHafiz Neil Rothenberg has been an initiate in the Sufi Order for 35 years. In addition to being a Representative in the Esoteric School, Hafiz has also been ordained as a Cherag in the Universal Worship, a Healing Conductor in the Healing Order and a Farmer in Zira'at. He has studied with Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, Pir Zia Inayat Khan and Shahabuddin David Less. The current focus of his activities is on conducting Study Circles for initiates and candidates and the Zira'at concentration.

 

Kerri

KerriKerri has been an initiate in the Sufi Order for over 15 years. She has been ordained as a Cherag in the Universal Worship, a Healing Conductor in the Healing Order and a Healing Cherag. Kerri is currently training to become a Healing Retreat Guide and Raphaelite Healer. She has studied with Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, Pir Zia Inayat, Devi Tide and Shahabuddin David Less. The current focus of her activities is on conducting Healing Circles and Universal Worship services with Amina and Gabriel.
